Erik Ludwig Henningsen was born in Copenhagen to a grocer named Frants Ludvig Hennington (1820-1869) and Hilda Charlotte Christine nee Schou (1824-1880) on 29 August. Ludwig died on 28 November 1930. He was a famous Danish painter and illustrator. He loved creating and depicting Social Realist paintings of exposed and poor groups in the 19th century at around 1880s and 1890s.

He showed early interest in arts and was articulated to a decorative painter A. Hellesen. He took some private drawing lessons with Christian Nielsen and later got admission in the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1873. He was an award winning artist. He travelled to Germany, Italy, Netherlands and France.
