About The Artist
Matthias Stomer or Matthias Stom was regarded as a Dutch painter or possibly a Flemish painter. He was born in 1600 and died in 1652. He is well known for his art works which he produced during his stay in Italy.
He was a Braque Era style painter who loved to create scenes derived for the Bible. He was very much influenced by the works of non-Italian followers of Caravaggio in Italy.
This Baroque painter worked at different locations in Italy and was much influenced by the patronage of religious institutions along with some prominent members of the nobility.
It was believed that he was given a nick name “Stom” which means “dumb” in dutch as an assumption that he suffered from some kind of disability.
His art style was very unique and did not change throughout his art career. Most of his paintings were seen having a similar source of light i.e. a candle. And most of his paintings were scenes from classical history, genre scenes and mythology.
